HOW MUCH IS A
MGA ?
The
MGA was always rather highly evaluated. 1600 cc powered MGAs are
probably the most estimated, 1500
MGAs beeing slightly under-powered according to some enthusiasts.
The 1600
mark 2 MGA, with its recessed grille is sometimes less appreciated.
At
the top
of the price range, the MGA Twin Cam
is much higher priced than other MGAs mostly for its exclusivity rather
than its engine. The twin cam engine hold a bad reputation for
unreliability, exactly the opposite of the long lasting Austin B series
engine that take place inside the other versions. Therefore, if you
cannot plan to own another MGA than the twin cam, expect high running
costs. The twin cam engine needs an overhaul every 5000 Km.
A
good alternative is to buy a MGA De Luxe : built with the
remaining Twin cam chassis, the Deluxe benefits from disc brakes all
round and nice centre locking steel wheels. But a MGA Deluxe is even
more rare than a Twin cam, production figures (believed to be less than
400 made) are not accurate.
Some
MG A were equipped with a MG B engine, which is the same
Austin B series with a 1800 cc capacity. This way, the MGA
gains
in performance but loose its originality. Prior to buy such a
"prepared" MGA, insure your classic insurance company is aware of this
modification and still accept to cover your vehicle with its scheme.
